An Evening with CoverGirl and Celebrity Makeup Artist Jake Bailey

CoverGirl and Jake Bailey

It isn’t often that I have the opportunity to bask in the presence of a makeup artist who is as funny, witty, talented, and utterly charming as CoverGirl’s very own celebrity makeup artist, Jake Bailey. At a recent press event for CoverGirl Cosmetics, I not only experienced all of the brand’s delightful new offerings, but also listened on in rapt fascination as Jake regaled those in attendance with tales of working with celebrities, his favorite CoverGirl products, and his personal journey from photographer to professional makeup artist.

CoverGirl and Jake Bailey

The group gathered in a fantastically intimate little restaurant in the Meatpacking District, ready to soak up all of the sound bites, tips, and factoids that Jake had to offer. After introductions, and him casually mentioning that I look like Idina Menzel (my favorite Broadway actress, whose makeup Jake had done on previous occasions), I knew that we’d be fast friends. After hearing some of his stories, I fell in love with him even more.

Jake began his career under the tutelage of the late great Kevyn Aucoin, who taught him the art and technique. Now, he is one of the most sought after names in the business, having beautified the faces of Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, and Idina Menzel, to name a few! Having had this wonderful occasion to grill the man behind the faces, I feel it is not only my privilege, but my duty to share all that I learned with all of you. Let’s talk technique, new CoverGirl products, and tips!

When opting for skin coverage in the summertime, ditch the tints, which require lots of layering, and don’t stand a chance against oily skin. Jake’s pick for full, flawless coverage is CoverGirl’s Natureluxe, which blends beautifully, and can be sheered out to the desired level of coverage with spf or moisturizer. His application method of choice is to put a small amount on the back of your hand, and using a flat tipped buff brush, blend into the skin. In a pinch, Jake recommends that his clients pour a small amount of foundation into their hands, and apply it like a lotion. Easy, breezy.

When dressing your face for your skintone, Jake recommends using a scrub and thick moisturizer on dry skin, and an astringent toner and no moisturizer for those with oilier skin. He also added that those with oily skin should be thankful, for they will have less wrinkles in their older age.

CoverGirl Intense ShadowBlast Beige Blaze

Jake is a HUGE fan of Intense ShadowBlast. A primer and cream shadow in one, he has used these on practically every starlet he’s touched, with amazing results. He even shared that when he did Katy Perry’s makeup for Smurfs Premiere, he went big on the eyes with Blue Bomb Shadow Blast, and Liquiline Blast in Blue Boom.

Speaking of Liquiline blast, Jake is a huge fan of those, too. Soft, pigmented, and waterproof, they work perfectly with the ShadowBlast.

Natureluxe Gloss Balm is one of his favorite lip products, providing an easy, low maintenance kiss of color. He loves it, and his clients do, too.

Going back to the eyes, Jake adores NatureLuxe Mousse Mascara. A fan of narrower brushes, Jake applies by starting at the base of the lashes, and brushing straight up and out for maximum impact. No wiggling for him, he prefers to wrap each lash individually.

Jake’s tip for perfect cat eyes a la client Taylor Swift: Draw the shape that you wish to create with a pencil liner first, and then fill it in with shadow and liquid liner later.

CoverGirl NatureLuxe Mascara Black

When asked what his absolute beauty essentials in a pinch were, Jake went with NatureLuxe foundation, Natureluxe Mascara, Natureluxe Gloss Bombs, Cream Blush, and Intense ShadowBlast. Not a bad list at all.

Armed with Jakes tips and tricks, I am excited to acquaint myself more with the CoverGirl line. CoverGirl’s newest additions (and some of Jake Bailey’s most favorite things) are all available at a drugstore near you.
