Oftentimes, a fragrance will go beyond just scent and names, also embodying a concept, a vision, a theme, or an idea. Enter conceptions of the duality of human nature- right and wrong, good and bad, angelic and demonic. At our cores, everyone has a little bit of both yin and yang in them, and that is the presiding theme in Givenchy’s iconic new fall fragrance launch, Ange Ou Demon Le Secret Elixir.
An analysis of the fragrance reveals that this floral is as complex as it is beautiful. The scent opens with light, fresh citrusy lemon and neroli, and sparkling green tea, which give way to soft, angelic, floral notes of jasmine, orange blossoms, and delicate frangipani. At its core, the scent is deliciously warm, sensual, and wicked, with notes of wood, vanilla, patchouli, and musk. My favorites, to be sure.
The flacon for this fragrance is a beauty, shaped like a faceted, semi-precious stone. As if the bottle were the embodiment of the scent’s core, it is colored a deep, murky, yet sparkling amethyst.
It isn’t often that I discuss ad campaigns for fragrances, but something most definitely needs to be said about this one. With star Uma Thurman as the face of the scent, the provocative promotional image depicts an ethereal, perfectly coiffed Uma, clad in an elegant white sheath. A glance in the mirror reveals her dark side, a black concoction of leather straps reminiscent of an S-M ensemble. Très risqué, non?
This fall, I’m embracing the duality of my own nature. Whether I woke up on the angelic side of the bed, or the slightly wicked, Givenchy’s newest scent addition, Ange Ou Demon Le Secret Elixir is exactly what I want and need. Look for the new addition online, and at your local Givenchy fragrance counter.
