Travel to the Orient with SK II Skincare

Ladies and gents of the beauty blogosphere, grab a cup of cocoa and your favorite blanket, for it is story time. Allow me to weave a tale of discovery, intrigue, and of a magnificent skincare line designed to magnify and enhance your countenance to clear, radiant, supple perfection.

The setting is a small town in 1970’s Japan. A group of intrepid scientists ventured forth into uncharted territory, in search of a famed sake brewery where workers were known for having youthful, clear, radiant hands that belied their ages. After a close study and a very thorough inspection, the scientists learned that the rumors were true, and that no matter the age of the individual, each brew masters had beautiful hands. This was of course a light bulb moment, and from that moment, the scientists embarked on another journey, one which involved an intense, thorough study of barley, yeast, and the fermentation process. You see, there was a clear connection between the workers rolling the barley in their hands during the fermentation process, and the pristine state their hands were in.

Five years of research, and the careful examination of over 300 types of yeast led to the discovery of Pitera, an ingredient that would become the keystone of the SK-II line, born in the 1980’s. In fact, the signature Facial Treatment Essence is 90% Pitera (more on that in a bit). A by-product of yeast fermentation, Pitera is a blend of vitamins, amino acids, minerals, and organic acids that protects, rejuvenates, and renews the skin.

I recently had the opportunity to explore the SK-II brand at a press event, learning about what makes it so magical from both SK-II’s research team, and brand ambassador Cate Blanchett’s very own makeup artist, Dotty. The science geek in me was in awe of the complexity of the Pitera derivation and reaction process, while the pop culturist in me was in awe of Dotty, whose skillful hands see to it that Cate Blanchett always looks flawless. Having tried the essence for myself, I could relate to Dotty and Cate’s dedication to, and passion for the brand.

After the presentation, I had the opportunity to see and feel, firsthand both a reenactment of the barley rolling action a sake brew master takes part in daily, and the damage done to my skin for past transgressions. The former was rather serene and relaxing, while the latter was rather eye-opening.

Most SK-II counters are equipped with a skin analysis machine, a sophisticated box with a camera that shows everything from hydration levels, to wrinkles, and even sun damage. I knew that my skin has seen a lot of sun damage (especially around my nose), but what I didn’t anticipate is the beginnings of fine lines and wrinkles under my eye area, and the swelling of the pores on the apples of my cheeks.

In addition to daily use of a good eye cream, my technician also recommended that I engage in regular exfoliation to regulate my skin’s texture, moisturize twice daily, and use the SK-II Facial Essence twice a day to tone, moisturize, and refresh my face, neck, and décolleté.SKI II Skincare Skin Balancing Essence

Armed with both new knowledge, and a deeper understanding of skincare ritual, I have embraced SK-II with arms wide open. In fact, I Pitera the fool who doesn’t at least try the Facial Treatment Essence (you know I had that up my sleeve, didn’t you?).

SK-II is available both online, and at your local fine retailer.

My mom would drink the facial essence if she could. I’ll tell her to try sake instead!
